Buddhism is much more diverse and multifaceted than many people think. Shin ('Pure Land') Buddhism manages to be, simultaneously, one of the most widely practiced forms of this tradition (the largest Buddhist school in Japan) and the least understood in the West. From the beginning, Shin was a highly sophisticated lay form of Buddhism. This thoughtful short outline of its spirituality, while disclaiming academic originality is distinguished by its clarity, enthusiasm, and indeed its high level of accuracy. Written by a Shin priest, it shows very well why this form of Buddhism-real Buddhism, a form of Buddhism very different from the many popular images of it current in the West-might appeal to modern seekers depressed and frustrated with the decadent and sterile world around them. It also suggests why Shin Buddhism has so much to offer in fruitful dialogue and collaboration with its Christian brothers and sisters. Paraskevopoulos' little book is a delightful read, 'adorned with the fragrance of light' to quote a Buddhist text.

Call Of The Infinite The Way of Shin Buddhism edition by John Paraskevopoulos Religion Spirituality eBooks

More than 40 years ago I accidentally came across Buddhism and since then its wonderful teachings have remained an important part of my life. However, Buddhism is not an easy religion/philosophy to absorb and like so many other people, I wondered if I would ever fully understand it. Would I be able to perfect myself in readiness for nirvana?
After reading countless books, listening to many CDs on Buddhism I was ready to accept the fact that I would never reach full understanding.

That is until I read this totally beautiful little book.

A mere 96 pages, this book not only brought me a complete, though short, overview of Buddhism in general but opened up to me in a very readable and easily understandable way the lovely teachings of the Shin Pure Land school, a road I have followed for some time now.

This little volume has given me inestimable warmth and joy and certainly made my life more meaningful. It's undoubtedly the best book on Buddhism, Shin in particular, I have ever read.

I give this book the highest recommendation I can muster.

Call Of The Infinite The Way of Shin Buddhism edition by John Paraskevopoulos Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews

One of the best books on Shin Buddhism I have read. Highly recommended.
This is the book that got me into Shin Buddhism. I always recommend it as an introduction to interested people.
A book of clarity and passion, that convinces any doubters (including myself) that Shinran's teachings are right in the heart of the Mahayana. Its only trouble is that you don't want it to end, and then it does.
This is an excellent presentation of Shin Buddhism. It is clear, concise, and very readable. The author presents The basics of Jodo Shinshu in a passionate manner. Would recommend to anyone interested.
The literature in English on Shin Buddhism (Jodo Shinshu), the largest denomination in Japan and the oldest on American soil, continues to grow, albeit slowly. But what it lacks in quantity it more than makes up for in quality. In 2009 alone we saw the publication of Jeff Wilson's Buddhism of the Heart Reflections on Shin Buddhism and Inner Togetherness and Monshu Koshin Ohtani's The Buddha's Wish for the World. The first is an anecdotal account by an American convert to Shinshu, the second a series of short inspirational chapters by the head of the Jodo Shinshu denomination.

CALL OF THE INFINITE is a rare and lovely thing a succinct treatment in 96 pages of the major concerns of Shin faith and life which manages to be compelling for all its brevity. Author John Paraskevopoulos is an Australian convert who is also a Shin priest. He has the marvellous ability to anticipate a reader's questions and answer them in straightforward fashion in a clear, lively prose.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend CALL OF THE INFINITE to one who has no previous background in Shin Buddhism. I feel confident that such a reader could then go on to the more fully-orbed works of such established writers as Alfred Bloom, Dennis Hirota, Kenneth Tanaka, and Taitetsu Unno.
Contrary to some dogmatic and religious approach of Pure Land Buhdism which is usually not effectiv , Paraskevopoulos's view about the effect of the " other side " on us and the effect of true Compassion is tremendously effectiv for the seeker
This short book reads as if it were a dissertation on Shin Buddhism. That is not a bad thing. The author makes observations that I had to read, re-read, and re-read again to wrap my head around the concepts. I wish an occasional example was thrown in. Nevertheless, this is a brilliant read...not a first book on Shin. If you understand the basics, then this is a good, serious study.
